Ultrapure began with a belief that healthcare could simply be better. More effective, more advanced and more thoughtfully designed around the body it is meant to support.
What started as decades of research and formulation work became a proprietary healthcare technology capable of delivering powerful, reliable performance while also supporting biocompatibility, stability and the body’s natural healing process.
At the heart of that thinking is a simple principle: medical innovation should remove compromises, not create new ones. Today, that philosophy still shapes everything we develop: science-led solutions built around innovation, efficacy and better outcomes in real-world care.
The Story of Dr. Maria Smith
Ultrapure® exists because of the work of Dr. Maria Smith.
Born in Bulgaria, in Eastern Europe, Dr. Smith built a life shaped by medicine, science, formulation and an unusually broad cultural background. She studied homeopathy and veterinary science in Russia and was proficient in six languages — English, Russian, Bulgarian, Slovakian, French and Macedonian.
After moving to South Africa, she practised as a homeopath while continuing to explore chemistry and formulation science. Her work expanded into her own laboratory, where she developed formulations and created products for a number of companies, while also running an integrative health practice.
That combination of clinical experience and formulation science shaped the way she approached healthcare. She was interested not only in whether something worked, but in how it interacted with the body, healthy tissue and everyday life.
For decades, one area of research remained central to her work: hypochlorous acid.
Dr. Smith spent years refining the chemistry, purity and practical application of HOCl, driven by the belief that effective antimicrobial care should not have to come at the expense of healthy tissue or patient comfort.
Her work became the scientific foundation for Ultrapure® and continues to influence the way the company develops healthcare solutions today.
Without Dr. Maria Smith, there would be no Ultrapure®.

Augustine Nwozor represents the next chapter of UltraPure®.
A UCT Accounting graduate with a strong entrepreneurial instinct, Augustine has played a central role in transforming decades of scientific research into a commercially scalable healthcare technology company.
Building on Dr. Maria Smith’s scientific foundation, he helped advance key elements of Ultrapure®’s manufacturing technology, including the processes behind its exceptional purity, consistency and long-term stability.
In 2025, Augustine won the Aspen Route to Market Competition, where he pitched UltraPure® alongside some of South Africa’s most promising health and medical businesses - recognition of both the company’s innovation and its commercial potential.
Today, Augustine leads Ultrapure's growth, strategy and expansion into new markets, products and applications, with the ambition of building the company into a significant force in healthcare innovation.
